Cocoa Beach Tragedy
In Cocoa Beach, law enforcement responded to Lori Wilson Park on Saturday following reports of two youths in distress in the water. A 12-year-old was rescued, but a 17-year-old was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Don Walker, a Brevard County Beach Rescue spokesperson, noted the "seas were extremely rough" on Saturday.
Daytona Beach Incident
On Friday evening, a 32-year-old woman drowned in Daytona Beach after being caught in a rip current north of Main Street Pier. Volusia County Beach Safety reported that she was found unresponsive in the ocean approximately 100 meters from shore. She was transported to a local hospital but pronounced dead.
Weather Conditions
Saturday saw a broken line of showers and thunderstorms stretching from the Gulf through the Carolinas. Four damaging wind reports were submitted, with gusts reaching 60 mph. Minor tree damage was also reported.
Lingering Showers
Spotty showers lingered over Florida and the Carolinas after the severe weather risk subsided. Periods of heavy rain are expected to persist across Florida, potentially causing localized flash flooding due to slow-moving storms through Monday.
Future Threats
A cluster of showers and thunderstorms are predicted to develop over parts of Missouri and Illinois on Sunday afternoon and evening, posing a marginal risk of severe weather, including damaging winds and quarter-sized hail. Tuesday and Wednesday will bring the next chance for severe weather across the Southern Plains and Gulf region, impacting approximately four million people in north Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas on Tuesday, and 13 million from east Texas to Alabama on Wednesday.
