Social Media's "Big Tobacco Moment?"
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, along with the CEOs of TikTok and Snap, have been invited to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 23. The hearing, titled "Examining Tech Industry Practices and the Implications for Users and Families: Is This Social Media's Big Tobacco Moment?" will focus on Big Tech and AI safety oversight, according to committee spokesperson Hannah Akey.
Pressure Mounts Amidst Lawsuits
The tech giants are facing increased scrutiny as social media and AI companies face mounting lawsuits. The lawsuits include some first-time losses. The Judiciary Committee hearing follows a subcommittee hearing this week featuring parents pushing for stricter online legislation.
Congressional Scrutiny Returns
This marks the first time social media CEOs will testify in Congress since 2024. The previous hearing before the Judiciary Committee covered many of the same topics. The committee has not yet received formal RSVPs from the CEOs, but discussions are ongoing, according to Akey.
Demands for Accountability
People deserve to hear directly from CEOs, Akey stated. Senator Chuck Grassley announced he'd invited the tech leaders after a pair of landmark court decisions against two of the firms. As Congress gets closer to passing kids' online safety legislation, the pressure is on tech companies to address concerns about their platforms' impact on children.
