Report's Contentious Release
The Democratic National Committee on Thursday released its autopsy of the 2024 election, a 192-page report that DNC Chair Ken Martin had initially kept under wraps. Martin faced intense pressure to release the report, including from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who expressed his unhappiness with the delay in a phone conversation. The report, intended to analyze the Democrats' loss to Donald Trump, was ultimately released with a disclaimer on each page stating that "This document reflects the views of the author, not the DNC."
Martin's Apology and Disclaimer
Ken Martin apologized for the delay, saying he did not want to create a distraction before the midterms. Martin said that the report "does not meet my standards," but he released it for transparency. Democratic strategist Paul Rivera authored the report, but Martin told DNC members that Rivera no longer advises the DNC.
Key Omissions and Criticisms
The autopsy report omits key issues, including any mention of Gaza, Israel, Palestine, Jewish, Muslim, foreign policy, protest, or genocide. The report does not address President Joe Biden's decision to seek reelection or the selection of Kamala Harris to replace him on the ticket. Liberal groups like RootsAction criticized the report, with co-founder Jeff Cohen saying the autopsy is "almost worthless" due to the lack of discussion of the Biden administration's Israel policy. Margaret DeReus, the executive director of the IMEU Policy Project, stated that DNC officials found Biden's support for Israel to be a "net-negative" for Democrats in 2024.
Campaign Strategy Shortcomings
The report lays partial blame on the Biden political operation for failing to effectively support Harris. The report states that the Democrats "did not effectively drive Trump's negatives," and the White House did not improve Harris's standing. The autopsy also analyzed a Trump attack ad that featured Harris voicing support for gender-affirming surgery for transgender inmates. The report concluded that there was no effective response if Harris would not change her position.
Internal DNC Friction
The DNC included annotations in the report, highlighting missing data and unsubstantiated claims. One annotation reads "no evidence provided" next to a claim that the national campaign did not effectively drive Trump's negatives. The report criticizes Harris's outreach to key segments of America and includes references to "identity politics." The report highlights the Democrats' underperformance with men, stating that "male voters require direct engagement."
Financial Disparities
The Republican National Committee has a significant fundraising lead, raising $247 million, spending $161 million, and banking $123.9 million with no debt. The DNC has raised $189 million and spent almost $197 million, leaving it with about $14.4 million in cash reserves and $17.5 million in debt.
Calls for Accountability
Democratic activist David Hogg is demanding that Ken Martin resign following the delayed release of the report. Democratic strategist Chuck Rocha wrote on X, "there must be accountability for those who continue to fail up in this party." Florida DNC member Allison Minnerly said the release of the report shows that "with consistent pressure, the status quo does have to respond."
With the midterm elections approaching, the DNC faces pressure to address the issues raised in the autopsy and demonstrate accountability to regain the trust of voters.
