Affected Products and Retailers
An Illinois food manufacturer, John B. Sanfilippo and Son, is recalling multiple snack products due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall, initiated as a "precautionary measure," impacts nut mixes and a corn mix sold under the brand names Southern Style Nuts, Fisher, Squirrel Brand, and Good & Gather.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall notice advises consumers who have purchased the affected items to refrain from consuming them. The Good & Gather product, a Mexican street corn-inspired trail mix, was available at Target. Other recalled products were sold at various retail stores, online, and through QVC.
Contaminated Ingredient
The snack mixes contain dry milk powder previously recalled by California Dairies. While the FDA stated that the seasoning tested negative for Salmonella before use, the recall was initiated due to concerns about the milk powder.
Health Risks of Salmonella
Salmonella is a bacterial disease spread through contaminated food or water. The FDA warns that it can cause serious, and sometimes fatal, infections in young children, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Consumer Guidance
The FDA advises consumers to return the recalled products to the store of purchase for a full refund or replacement. Individuals who have recently purchased the listed items should not consume them.
Powdered Beverage Mix Recall
Separately, Ghirardelli is recalling certain powdered beverage mixes. These products were made with milk powder that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
Consumers should check their pantries for these recalled snack mixes to avoid potential health risks.
