Blockade Announcement
President Donald Trump announced Sunday via social media that the U.S. Navy will begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, effective Monday. This action follows the collapse of peace talks between the U.S. and Iran in Pakistan. According to U.S. Central Command, the U.S. military will begin blockading all ships going to and from Iran at 10 a.m. EDT. Trump stated the Navy will "seek and interdict" vessels that have paid a toll to Iran in order to pass through the strait.
Market Reactions
Oil prices surged above $100 per barrel following the announcement. West Texas Intermediate crude hovered above $104 per barrel. The Indian Rupee fell 48 paise to 93.31 against the dollar. Emerging assets also declined. Copper prices fell, and a key aluminum spread flared. Two fuel tankers are attempting to exit the Persian Gulf by sailing close to the Iranian coast.
Failed Negotiations
Vice President JD Vance said "no deal" was reached in the Iran peace talks. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, said that U.S. officials "failed to gain the trust" of their Iranian counterparts. According to The Guardian, the U.S. position is that Iran must abandon its capacity to develop a nuclear weapon, while Tehran insists it is not seeking one. Trump claimed on his Truth Social account that Iranian negotiators "were very unyielding" about the nuclear program.
International Response
The UK will not participate in the U.S. blockade. Southeast Asian nations urged the U.S. and Iran to continue negotiations. ADNOC CEO said the Strait of Hormuz is not Iran's to control. Chinese, Indian and Pakistani ships have been among the few to transit the strait under deals with Tehran.
Potential Consequences
Senator Mark Warner said he didn't understand the "logic" behind the blockade, noting "$4-a-gallon gasoline" and that "25 percent of the world's natural gas goes through the strait." Trump said the price of oil may be "a little bit higher" because of the blockade. Experts believe this move directly impacts China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, and could cripple Iran's economy. Two supertankers carrying Iranian crude have anchored off India's coasts.
Trump's Stance
Trump said Iran tried to "extort" the world by intimidating ship owners and saying it laid mines in the strait. He added that during the blockade U.S. forces will destroy the mines the Iranians laid in the strait. Trump claimed on his Truth Social account that the meeting "went well" and that U.S. negotiators "became...very friendly and respectful of Iran's Representatives." He also stated, "Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!"
With tensions escalating, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged her ruling party to accelerate talks on constitutional reform.
