Discovery Leads to Rescue in Eastern France
A 9-year-old boy was rescued from his father's utility van in the village of Hagenbach, eastern France, where he had been locked up for over a year and a half. Local prosecutor Nicolas Heitz reported that police were alerted by a neighbor who heard “sounds of a child” coming from the vehicle on Monday. Upon forcing the van open, officers found the boy lying in a fetal position, naked, and covered by a blanket atop a mound of trash and excrement.
Health Condition and Immediate Action
The child was severely malnourished and unable to walk due to being in a seated position for an extended period. He was immediately hospitalized following his rescue. Heitz stated that the boy had not showered since 2024 and had to urinate in plastic bottles while defecating in garbage bags. The prosecutor's office is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the boy's prolonged captivity.
Father's Claim and Lack of Evidence
The boy’s father, who is 43 years old, claimed he locked his son in the van in November 2024 to “protect him” from his partner, who allegedly wanted to send the boy to a psychiatric hospital. However, Heitz noted that there were no medical records indicating the boy had any psychiatric issues prior to his disappearance, and he had been performing well academically.
Charges Filed Against Parents
The father faces preliminary charges of kidnapping and other related offenses and is currently in custody. His partner, aged 37, has denied knowing about the boy's situation and has been charged with failure to help a minor in danger. She has since been released under judicial supervision. The boy's 12-year-old sister and the 10-year-old daughter of the father's partner have been placed in social services' care.
Community Shock and Investigation
Residents of Hagenbach expressed shock upon learning of the boy's situation, stating they had been unaware of his captivity. Some neighbors reported occasionally hearing noises from the van but were told it was a cat. Friends and family of the boy believed he was in a psychiatric institution, as they had been informed he had transferred to a different school. The prosecutor's office is exploring whether others were complicit or aware of the boy's detention.
Next Steps for the Victim and Authorities
The boy's recovery is now the focus as he receives medical attention. Authorities continue to investigate the case, seeking to uncover the full extent of the circumstances that led to his confinement. This troubling incident highlights the need for community vigilance and the importance of reporting unusual situations that may indicate neglect or abuse.
