Devastation in Kyiv
A massive overnight Russian missile and drone strike on Ukraine resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people and over 100 injuries, according to authorities. The attack, which included 73 missiles and 656 drones launched by Russia, targeted major cities such as Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv, causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the attack was a "completely transparent statement from Russia: if Ukraine is not protected from ballistic and other missile strikes, these attacks will continue."
Plea for US Assistance
In the aftermath of the strikes, Zelenskyy made an urgent appeal to the United States for help, emphasizing the need for "assistance in supplying missiles for the Patriot systems." He highlighted the importance of European anti-ballistic defense and called for effective responses to the attack, stating, "We count on the support of our partners."
Impact on Civilians
The strikes have had a profound impact on the civilian population. In Kyiv, six people were killed and significant damage was caused to residential buildings. During the attack, thousands of residents sought shelter in the subway system. In Dnipro, 12 people were killed, including an eight-year-old boy and a woman pulled from the rubble of an apartment block. The attacks have escalated fears and prompted many to prepare for further violence, with some residents stating they now regularly stay in shelters.
International Response
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia's latest attack showed that Putin "is a war criminal and loser who has no cards except terror." Sybiha urged partners to increase funding for NATO's PURL program, which would allow Kyiv to obtain more American weapons and ammunition, including anti-missile defenses. He also called for new sanctions against Russia and the advancement of Ukraine's European Union membership negotiations.
Escalation in Conflict
Moscow had warned of the strikes for days. The New York Times reported that Moscow's repeated warnings, combined with the delay before the attack, seemed intended to inflict a psychological toll on the Ukrainian capital. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that the strikes targeted "military-industrial," fuel, and transport facilities, as well as military bases, achieving all designated objectives.
