Army Veteran Charged Over Delta Force Secrets Leak

Courtney Williams, a 40-year-old from North Carolina, was arrested on Tuesday by the FBI for allegedly sharing classified information with a journalist. Federal prosecutors unsealed charges on Wednesday accusing her of transmitting national defense information without authorization. This action stems from her time with Delta Force, a U.S. Army Special Military Unit, where she held top-secret clearance from 2010 to 2016.

Prosecutors claim Williams provided documents, photographs, and notes to the journalist through emails and a removable hard drive in at least ten batches between 2022 and 2024. The journalist published an article and a book that included classified details about Delta Force operations, such as harassment and misconduct allegations. An FBI affidavit states that officials reviewed the published material and confirmed it contained secret-level information.

Seth Harp, the reporter who featured Williams in his work, described her as a "courageous whistleblower who exposed rampant gender discrimination and sexual harassment" in Delta Force. Harp asserted in a social media statement that Williams insisted on being quoted by name because her actions were "entirely above-board, legitimate, and admirable." He criticized the indictment as "slapdash" and suggested it aimed to retaliate against her efforts to address workplace issues for female employees.

Court records show Williams exchanged over 180 messages and more than 10 hours of phone calls with the journalist from 2022 onward. On the day of the article's publication, Williams texted the journalist expressing concern about the "amount of classified information being disclosed." Prosecutors also cited texts where Williams told her mother she might face arrest for the disclosures and mentioned a specific Espionage Act provision.

Williams faces one count of illegally communicating national defense information, with a possible penalty of up to 10 years in prison if convicted. A federal judge ordered her temporary detention ahead of a preliminary hearing on April 13. FBI Director Kash Patel stated in a social media post that the arrest sends a message to potential leakers that authorities are pursuing such cases.

The charges highlight tensions between secrecy and accountability in military units like Delta Force. Harp noted in his statement that real crimes, such as murders linked to drug trafficking at Fort Bragg, remain unsolved while this case proceeds. This situation raises questions about how employees report harassment, as Williams filed grievances with the Army Special Operations Command inspector general and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission during her tenure.
